Trump reportedly won’t throw out 1st pitch

Tim DanielsFeatured ColumnistMarch 28, 2017

United States President Donald Trump declined an invitation from the Washington Nationals to throw the ceremonial first pitch before the team’s Opening Day game against the Miami Marlins next Monday.

Barry Svrluga of the Washington Post confirmed the news. CBS Sports MLB reported the decision was due to a scheduling conflict.

Earlier Tuesday, Anna Palmer, Jake Sherman and Daniel Lippman of Politico received confirmation from correspondent Luke Russert that Trump was “in talks” to take the mound and possibly spend an inning in the MASN announcing booth during the contest.

The tradition of American presidents throwing the first pitch dates back to William Howard Taft, who appeared at Griffith Stadium for the Washington Senators on Opening Day in 1910.

Various chief executives from both political parties have taken part in the act ever since, with perhaps the most famous instance coming from George W. Bush at the 2001 World Series in New York City following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Trump has met some resistance within baseball following his inauguration in January, though.

Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post passed along comments Baltimore Orioles executive vice president John Angelos—the son of team owner Peter Angelos—made about the president and the first pitch during an appearance on the B-More Opinionated podcast:

Ultimately that decision is with the ownership group as to what major politicians and political figures and societal figures they want to invite. I know that the administration has taken a lot of criticism for its controversial positions; I think more so perhaps for statements made both during the campaign and since the administration came in concerning things that are considered to be problematic from a race, ethnicity, religious, gender, disability [standpoint]. People in those communities have been spoken about very negatively by a candidate and now president.

You’re asking my personal opinion; I think it’s really incumbent upon any individual who leads the country to step away from those types of statements, to apologize for those statements and retract them. And then to turn the page, and then to move forward in embracing their community, all parts of that community. Until that happens, it wouldn’t be my preference to have the president come throw a pitch. But that’s up to the ownership as to what they would like to do there.

Both the White House and the Nationals organization declined to comment on the situation, according to ESPN.com.

In February, Trump also decided not to fill out a March Madness basketball bracket with ESPN.

Amid turmoil, Uber releases first diversity report

On Tuesday, the company released its first ever diversity report. Unsurprisingly, it revealed that female techies aren’t the standard at the firm: Just 15% of its technical workers are women.

That’s the same percentage as Twitter (TWTR, Tech30), but smaller than Facebook (FB, Tech30) (17%) and Slack (24%).

Uber’s culture — and its treatment of female employees — has been in the spotlight after a former female engineer alleged sexism and harassment at the company last month.

The allegations prompted CEO Travis Kalanick to call for an “urgent investigation.” He hired former attorney general Eric Holder to lead the investigation, which is expected to conclude at the end of April.

But that’s far from the only damning headline the company has faced recently. Google’s Waymo is suing Uber for allegedly stealing self-driving car trade secrets, and several high level executives have departed in the last few weeks. There have also been reports of questionable behavior from Kalanick, from arguing with a driver about the company’s fares to allegedly visiting an escort-karaoke bar in Seoul in 2014 with Uber staff.

The company has been working in overdrive to paint itself as a equitable, inviting place for people of all backgrounds to work.

Related: Arianna Huffington: Sexual harassment isn’t a ‘systemic problem’ at Uber

In a conference call last week with reporters, board member Arianna Huffington, human resources head Liane Hornsby and U.S. General Manager Rachel Holt took the helm. When asked by two reporters why only women were representing Uber on the call, Huffington said, “I think we should take it as a really good sign of how women are valued at the highest levels of Uber.”

But numbers talk, too.

According to the report, which is based on data through March, just 22% of Uber’s overall leadership positions are held by women. When it comes to technical leadership roles, that percentage is halved.

But Uber’s demographics aren’t far off from other tech companies. In fact, in some cases, it fares better.

36% of its 12,000 global employees are women, compared to 33% of Facebook’s 17,000 employees. (The figures don’t include drivers, who are contract workers.) Uber’s numbers are buoyed by its foreign operations, where women make up a slightly bigger sliver of its workforce compared to its U.S. and Canada operations.

When it comes to ethnic diversity, Uber has zero technical leaders who are black or Hispanic. That’s only bumped up slightly when looking at non-technical leadership positions: (3.7% are black and and 1.2% Hispanic). However, the report noted that in the last 12 months, it’s increased its hiring of black and Hispanic employees.

Last week, Kalanick met with civil rights activist Reverend Jesse Jackson to discuss diversity. Uber has also pledged $3 million over the next three years to organizations helping women and underrepresented groups in tech.

“I know that we have been too slow in publishing our numbers — and that the best way to demonstrate our commitment to change is through transparency,” Kalanick said in a statement on Tuesday. “And to make progress, it’s important we measure what matters.”

On its diversity page, where it published the report Tuesday, Uber lists its various employee resource groups. They include “Shalom,” a group for “connecting Uberettos and Jewbers from all backgrounds” and “UberHue,” its black employee resource group.

In addition to its gender and ethnic stats, Uber disclosed that 15% of its U.S. employees hold a work visa, and come from 71 countries.

Luxury getaways for younger travelers

From perks like organic baby food and child-sized bathrobes to larger hotel suites and more kid-focused activities, the luxury travel market is catering to much younger travelers.

In the past year, the St. Regis has seen a 20% increase in families staying at its properties.

Older parents with more money are helping to fuel the trend, said Paul James, global brand leader for the St. Regis, The Luxury Collection, and W Hotels.

“We are seeing people in their 40s with young children,” James said. “By the time you are 40 and made money, you don’t want to stay at the cheap motel down the road. You don’t compromise your lifestyle.”

He added that seeing kids at the front of a plane is becoming more common. “I flew back in January, and everyone in the business cabin had a child with them.”

As more travelers bring their families along, experts said demand for larger suites and villas at hotels has increased. For instance, at the St. Regis in Bali, villa suites sell out 10 times faster than the main hotel suites, James said.

Luxury hotels are also stepping up their child-focused amenities and activities.

“Parents want to go and have adult experiences, but also want to make sure their kids will be catered to,” said Kara Slater, a travel agent with SmartFlyer California who specializes in family travel.

At the Four Seasons Resort in Orlando, children are normally welcomed with chocolate alligators or organic baby food and receive child-size bathrobes.

Guests ages 4-12 at The Resort at Pelican Hill in California can attend Camp Pelican where each day’s supervised activities have a different theme like Treasure Island Tuesdays or Space Exploration Fridays. The clubhouse has digital microscopes, video games and computer stations. A full day at the club runs $90 and $60 for a half day.

Parents looking for some alone time in the evening can send their travel companions to Kid’s Night Out, which includes dinner, movie and popcorn for $60.

Latitude, a program for teens, runs $15 an hour ($50 for a half day) has daily activities including surf and kayak camp. And the lounge has Netflix-connected TVs, video games and a special food menu.

The resort also offers a three-hour Children’s Resort Etiquette Class for guests ages 7-12 that teaches travel and social etiquette.

The room service menu includes “ants on a log” (celery with peanut butter and raisins on top) and veggies and hummus, according to Kate Starr, spokeswoman for the resort.

Families aren’t just heading to the traditionally kid-friendly spots, but are seeking out more exotic locations. Hawaii and Europe are popular, according to Slater.

Authentic experiences are also a priority for people traveling with kids, said Dan Austin, president of Austin Adventures.

“We see families often start out with a domestic vacation, like Yellowstone, and the next year they head to Alaska or the Canadian Rockies. By the third trip, they are looking at Peru, Belize and Costa Rica.”

‘DWTS’: First couple eliminated is…

Story highlights

  • First elimination was held Monday
  • Kattan had a previous injury which affected his dancing

Unfortunately Chris Kattan can’t help that because of a crippling injury in his past.

The former “SNL” star shared in a video on the show Monday night that he had broken his neck 14 years ago and has had multiple surgeries since then which affect his range of motion.

“Part of what I used to do was physical comedy, but now I can’t,” Kattan said with tears in his eyes. “It’s really sad when somebody says, ‘I miss the old Chris.’ That sucks to hear.”

His dance partner, Witney Carson, was also moved to tears after Kattan showed her an x-ray of his back with all the surgical pins he has.

“It’s crazy that somebody can have that happen to them, and then be brave enough to try something like this,” she said.

Low scores landed Kattan and Carson in the bottom two along with singer Charo and her partner Keo Motsepe.

The combination of the judges’ scores and audience votes sent Kattan and Carson home.

“She was an amazing inspiration, and I couldn’t have… done this without her,” Kattan said of Carson after they were eliminated. “I wish that my surgery and all that was noted before.”

Spicer tosses out Russian dressing analogy

Story highlights

  • “At some point … you’re going to have to take ‘no’ for an answer”
  • The WH is under clouds of suspicion about links between the President and Moscow

“If the President puts Russian salad dressing on his salad tonight, somehow that’s a Russia connection,” the White House spokesman insisted during a contentious exchange with reporters.

He said every official that’s been briefed on the matter has said there’s no sign of “collusion” between the Trump campaign and Russia.

“At some point … you’re going to have to take ‘no’ for an answer,” he said, at one point during his answer telling a reporter to quit shaking her head.

It was the latest attempt by the White House to remove itself from under clouds of suspicion about links between the President and Moscow. This week, Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner — also one of Trump’s most trusted aides — offered to testify before Congress about his meetings with the leaders of a key Russian bank.

Kushner is just one of several Trump allies — including Attorney General Jeff Sessions and former national security adviser Michael Flynn — who have admitted to meetings with top Russian operatives during last year’s campaign.

Through all those disclosures, the White House has insisted there’s no evidence suggesting the Trump campaign improperly communicated with Russia.

Last week, Spicer said that individuals associated with Trump being investigated by the FBI for potential cooperation with Russia were merely “hangers-on around the campaign” — including former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, who he claimed had “a very limited role for a very limited amount of time.”

Late last month, Spicer grew heated when responding to additional questions about ties between Trump and Russia, alleging the press was whipping up a nonexistent story.

“How many people have to say that there’s nothing there before you realize there’s nothing there?” Spicer asked. “At some point, you do have to ask yourself what are you actually looking for. How many times do you have to come to the same conclusion before you take the answer?”

DNC chair asks entire staff to resign

Story highlights

  • The DNC was rocked by hacks, accusations of favoritism and leadership shakeups during the 2016 campaign
  • Committee staffers expected the request

The house-cleaning move means Perez can start from scratch as he remakes a DNC that was rocked by hacks, accusations of favoritism and leadership shakeups during the 2016 campaign.

“This is longstanding precedent at the DNC and has happened during multiple chair transitions,” DNC spokeswoman Xochitl Hinojosa said. “The process was started before the election of the new chair. From the beginning, Tom has been adamant that we structure the DNC for future campaigns. Current and future DNC staff will be integral to that effort.”

Leah Daughtry, an adviser to interim chair Donna Brazille and the chief executive officer of the 2016 Democratic National Convention, sent a letter asking every party staffer to submit letters of resignation dated April 15 immediately after Perez won the DNC chair race a month ago. NBC News first reported the request.

DNC staffers expected the request. The party had already been operating at reduced staffing levels, and had brought on some staffers on temporary contracts.

A Democrat familiar with the request called it normal in leadership transitions, and said the same thing has happened during previous installations of new party chairs. The move is also expected to allow Perez to make structural changes at the DNC that many party members consider overdue.

Already, a 30-person committee launched by Perez is interviewing potential new staffers as the party attempts to put the rifts caused by the 2016 primary contest between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders behind it.

Also to be determined: The roles that new deputy chair Keith Ellison — the Minnesota congressman who narrowly lost the party’s chair race to Perez — and other vice chairs will play.

The overhaul will be particularly welcome to progressives, who viewed the DNC under former chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz as biased in favor of Clinton and against Sanders. Progressive activists, angered by Wasserman Schultz, called for wholesale changes at the DNC during the 2016 election.
